Do you feel like you never have time to do anything? Do you have important things to do you can’t get done? Do you feel trapped inside a spiral of the same, tiresome activities with no free time or down time? Well, I’m here to give you some tips on how to figure out just how much time you are using, and on what. And how to get out of it. (This is mostly for high/middle schoolers, but I supposed it could apply to adults).
Identify What You Have to do Weekly
Identify your after-school activities first. Do you have swim team on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday? Do you have writing club every Monday until 3:15? Set up a table like the one below and you’ll probably see where a humungous chunk of your life goes.ActivityDayTimeCharacter CountsTBA/Once every two weeksUntil 3:15PenOhioEvery MondayUntil 3:15
Alright, so that doesn’t seem so bad. At least not for me. Now, identify all of the things not school related you do.ActivityDayTimeCharacter CountsTBA/Once every two weeksUntil 3:15PenOhioEvery MondayUntil 3:15AKotLThird Monday of Every MonthUntil 4:30Library ActivitiesOnce a monthTBAChoir~ once every 2.5 monthsUntil 3:30Youth GroupEvery Wednesday6:30-8:00DanceEvery Tuesday6:00-7:00
See that? That is a lot of things. Nearly every day of my week is taken up. That does not include homework, mother’s plans, or friend stuff. Now you know where a great deal of your time goes.
Identify Your Time Suckers
Do you spend way too much time binge watching Netflix? Do you have a bad habit of reading instead of sleeping? Do you play a few too many hours of computer games, or spend a little too much time on Vine? Write a list of the five biggest things you know are time suckers.
Writing
TV
Hangouts
Reading
Video games
Try to think of ways you can be doing the things you need to be doing instead of whatever’s taking up your precious time.
So, now we’ve identified why we have absolutely no time to do anything we want to do. We could drop some of our after-school activities, but, if you’re like me, you have a deep sense of loyalty and you just can’t.
How to Get Your Time Back!
Try doing what you need to do when you’d rather be watching TV or reading.
Write a To Do list and stick to it. If you stare at what you need to do, maybe you’ll have more motivation to do it.
Sign up for rescuetime.com. This site allows you to see just how much time you, a) spend on the computer, and b) spend on useless, non-productive things.
Give yourself a reward system. Don’t touch your phone until your room is clean. After you do three or four things, allow yourself an hour of YouTube or Netflix. This will motivate you.
Utilize your free time in study hall, in between classes, and in between places as much as possible. Get your homework done or start working on a project, if you can.
