Why I am So Stressed (Mathematically, anyways)

Why am I stressed?

This is a question I ask myself a lot. A few hyperbolic, short phrases are usually my explanations. Unsatisfying sentences that leave me feeling inadequate.

I’m taking college courses. I work 30 hours a week.

Finally, I got tired of plain gestures and decided to calculate out my existence and…

It ain’t no wonder I’m stressed.

So, without further ado, I present to you, mathematically, why I am a stressed human being.

First, thing we gotta note is how many hours are in a week. 24 hours a day times 7 days a week yields a 168 hour week.

That’s a lot of hours, right?

Well, no.

I work 30 hours a week on average, right? I also get there 15 minutes early to work every day, and stay after work 10 minutes to help lock up.

So, 25 minutes times 5 days a week equals about 2.5 hours.

So, I work 32.5 hours a week.

In addition to that, I also go to school for 30 hours a week.

That’s 62.5 hours a week.

That’s wayyyyy longer than a full time job with overtime. I could be making bank y’all.

So, 168 – 62.5 = 105.5

I’m already down to only 105 hours left in my week.

It’s a 45 minute drive to school and back every day. That’s about an hour and a half of driving a day. That 45 minute drive also pertains to work.

So I drive at least an hour and a half every day.

(Note, that’s when I’m not going grocery shopping, getting food on the way home, or running errands for my mom).

That’s 10.5 hours a week.

Now! We have to add an extra 15 minutes of driving from school to work every day.

Almost another 2 hours.

12.5 a week from home to school/work and back, and to drive from one location to the other.

I forgot!

I work an extra 5 hours cleaning for my mom every weekend. That’s another 45 minutes of driving every weekend too.

So, at the moment, we are at 67.5 hours a week for school and work. 13.5 hours of driving a week.

67.5 + 13.5 = 81 hours.

We are down to 87 hours left in the week. I haven’t even slept yet!

I don’t get home from work until around 10/ 10:25ish depending on the day and what I have to do. I don’t get into bed and fallen asleep until 11 or midnight, and it’s usually midnight. Sometimes one in the morning.

The latest I can possibly leave and still be on time for school is 6:45. I have to get up between 6 and 6:30.

I only get about 6 hours of sleep a night (which, let’s note, is NOT healthy, and if you don’t at least get seven hours of sleep, your body begins to shut down on you).

6 hours times 7 days is 42 hours of sleep a week. I’ll add another 5 hours for weekends, just in case.

47 hours of sleep a week (that number should be 56).

87 – 47 = 40 hours

40 hours to eat, do homework, do chores, run errands for my mom, help around the house, do my author stuff, write for the books I’ve been contracted, do after school activities, apply for scholarships, and study for tests.

I probably do an hour of homework a day.

We are down to 35 hours a week.

To put that in perspective, my chores take an hour to do (7 hours), packing lunch, helping and eating dinner, and breakfast probably average an hour a day (now we are at 14 hours).

21 hours left.

If I’m lucky, I am writing, reading, editing, and emailing people back about writing stuff for an hour a week. (Coordinating author presentations, emailing about cover designs, writing for a contract, and editing all take a long time).

14 hours.

I’ll technically have 3 hours of activities after school every week soon (2:30-4:00 is Writing Club, 2:30-4 robotics, the occasional NHS meeting).

11 hours.

I probably take a half hour shower every day, so that’s 3.5 hours a week.

7.5 hours.

7.5 hours to play games, relax, read books, watch TV, listen to music, clean my room, make my bed, relax, connect with friends, do extra homework, study. Also, do my online gym.

To do anything.

Literally I have ONE hour of free time a day. O N E. No wonder I’m stressed.

I am literally NEVER relaxing or resting.

Also, in other news, my lunches basically consist of carrots and a small bag of chips and the ‘main course’ is the optional side because I never have time to pack and I don’t want to waste money on fast food.

Guys.

Send help.

Now I’m gonna go and make edible cookie dough at 10pm on my only day off this week and chow down before I go to bed.
